The National Recycling Coalition, which presents the annual award, selected CET because its programs respond to local needs, create lasting partnerships and demonstrate the positive connection between economic development and environmental protection. CET received the award during a ceremony at the 18th Annual National Recycling Congress & Exposition held in Cincinnati, Ohio, September 27-30, 1999."CET's work and accomplishments over the last twenty years demonstrate that nonprofit organizations are an effective force in helping communities face and solve problems. During a period when many nonprofit recyclers are struggling, CET is developing new initiatives that divert materials from the waste stream, produce savings for individuals and create local economic benefits," said Laura Dubester, CET Co-Director. "We are honored to achieve this national recognition especially in light of the high status of previous winners. CET has learned much from their successes and is proud to join their ranks as an NRC award winner and national leader." Each year the National Recycling Coalition presents the Tim McClure Award for Outstanding Environmental and Community Leadership to a nonprofit organization or institution that displays initiative and commitment to recycling, to the environment and to community. Past winners include the Institute for Local Self Reliance (Washington, DC); The Materials for the Future Foundation (San Francisco, CA); EcoCycle Inc. (Boulder, CO); Bronx 2000 (Bronx, NY); and the St. Paul Neighborhood Energy Consortium (St Paul, MN). CET's mission is "to research, develop, demonstrate and promote those technologies which have the least disruptive impact on the natural ecology of the Earth." Since 1976, this mission has been carried out through community-based educational programs and services in waste management, environmental education, water and indoor air quality, energy conservation and sustainable development.
