BPI Certification

BPI’s national program identifies individual excellence in house-as-a-system evaluation, diagnostics and installation. The house-as-a-system approach teaches students about the relationships between different components within the home, how to identify problems at the root cause and provide solutions that improve energy efficiency while providing important safety functions such as mold prevention, indoor air quality, carbon monoxide testing, and combustion appliance safety checks. Stringent technical standards and requirements mean that BPI certified professionals are in demand - from homeowners, state and utility energy efficiency incentive programs and weatherization assistance programs.

The rewards are great. Not only do certified professionals enjoy increased employment opportunities, they also play an integral role in reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil and improving the comfort, safety, durability and energy efficiency of existing housing.

Why get BPI certified?
Get your slice of the stimulus pie.
A growing number of Federal, State and local incentive programs either encourage or require the work to be performed by BPI certified individuals.

Stand out from the crowd.
BPI certification is proof you have gone through rigorous, credible training.

The building industry is going green.
Go with it. Adopting more ecologically friendly practices will ensure that your business remains competitive.

Get the job done right, the first time.
You’ll know how to apply house-as-a-system techniques, upgrading the performance of homes. Your customers will appreciate that you can locate the real problems and fix them.

Meet our trainers

CET Trainer Chuck Miller leads an air sealing bootcamp training at Berkshire Country Day School in April 2010.

Chuck Miller
Project Manager, Trainer

Mr. Miller has 35 years of experience in construction, 30 of those on energy efficient building projects within Energy Crafted and Energy Star programs and he also serves as a local building inspector. He brings a depth of practical energy efficiency knowledge extracted from decades of design and systems input on hundreds of new homes and remodels. Mr. Miller is currently a trainer for the DOER’s residential energy codes seminars for code officials, CET’s residential weatherization and insulation courses for insulation contractors, and students in several state and federal Pathways out of Poverty grant funded programs. He is in the process of becoming a BPI Certified Building Analyst and Envelope Professional and a HERS rater.

Beth Paulson
Energy Analyst, Air Sealing Assistant Manager, Trainer

CET Energy Analyst Beth Paulson demonstrates a blower door test during an instrumented air sealing at a Florence, MA, home. The blower door test indicates how "leaky" a house is. The leaks can be found and sealed, to make the home more efficient.

Ms. Paulson is a certified Home Energy Rater and BPI Building Analyst and Envelope Professional. She performs inspections for the Energy Star Homes program and the LEED for Homes program, as well as conducts energy and green assessments, blower door tests and air sealing. Ms. Paulson teaches weatherization boot camp for contractors, trains CET’s air sealing staff, as well as site design at the Boston Architectural College. She received her M.A. in Landscape Architecture and a B.S. in Environmental Design from University of Massachusetts.

Bill Lafley
Energy Analyst, Trainer

CET Energy Analyst Bill Lafley checks the readings to assess air leaks in a home in Williamsburg. CET carries out home energy audits and air sealing through the MassSAVE program, which offers home energy assessments and incentives that help you save up to $2,000 on insulation and air sealing.
Mr. Lafley is a certified Home Energy Rater and BPI Building Analyst and Envelope Professional. Mr. Lafley works on the Energy Star New Home Construction program, and manages the utility-funded multi-family residential energy conservation program in western Massachusetts. He conducts plans analysis, building testing, quality control inspections and educational seminars for architects and builders. He has taught BPI courses, trainings on energy codes for code officials and architects, air sealing, and worked as an educator in environmental education for 12 years. He has a B.S. in Natural Resources from University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Ethan Jackson
Course Developer, Trainer

Mr. Jackson joined CET in November of 2008 as a home energy auditor , and since has moved into the position of Course Developer. He has a civil engineering degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is a certified engineer-in-training. Ethan is a certified BPI Building Analyst and Envelope Specialist and a certified Home Energy Rater.
