Reuse A Shoe

Is your house overrun with unwanted and worn out athletic shoes? Don’t throw them out!

You can recycle your old sneakers and shoes with GoodWill Industries.

Sneakers and shoes can be brought to Goodwill Inc. of the Berkshires, 157 Tyler Street, Pittsfield.

Over the course of fall 2004-mid-summer 2005, CET collected about 3,000 sneakers, weighing 4,560 pounds!

This sneaker collection was part of the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program, which is being introduced to communities across the country through partnership between Nike and the National Recycling Coalition.

CET was one of more than 30 community participants. The collected shoes are ground into a material called Nike Grind that is then used in surfaces such as tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds and running tracks. Communities involved in the Reuse-A-Shoe program can apply to Nike for grant funding to be used toward a new sports surface made with Nike Grind material.

When it comes to recycling, reusing, and reducing waste, at last, the shoe fits.
