Creative Reuse Project: Transform your Magazines!

Creative Reuse Project: Transform your Magazines!

By: Shelby Kuenzli, Digital Marketing EcoFellow

According to the EPA, roughly 350 million magazines are printed every year. However, only about 33% of paper products are recycled! Recycling magazines is a great way to reduce waste, however, you can also use them for many other purposes! Recently, we turned old magazines into a DIY coaster and colorful envelopes! See how we made them below! We also featured a demonstration on WWLP’s MassAppeal show. Check it out!

DIY Magazines Coaster

Materials:

  • Magazines
  • Modge Podge or similar glue material
  • Scissors
  • Paper Clip

Step 1: Rip out colorful pages from a magazines of your choice. Then fold one of the long sides of the magazine to a width of roughly ¼ to ½ inch.

Step 2: Then fold that section 3-4 times over and spread glue along the edge before the last fold. Cut along the edge until you have a strip. Make about 30 of these before you start making the coaster.

Step 3: To start, apply glue along one side of the first strip. Then unfold the paper clip. Start wrapping the first strip around the paper clip with the glue side wrapping in on itself. This should create a circular center to start your coaster.

Step 4: Apply glue to one side of the next strip. Attach it at the end of the previous strip and continue until there are no strips left or it’s as wide as you want it to be.

Step 5: Once complete, let the coaster dry for a few hours. Then it’s ready for use!

DIY Magazine Envelopes

Materials:

  • Magazines
  • Envelope
  • Scissors
  • Sharpie
  • Glue Stick

Step 1: Carefully fold apart the envelope until it can lay flat.

Step 2: Find a magazine page that you would like to use for your reuse envelope. Place the deconstructed envelope on the page so it fits completely on the page. Then trace the envelope with a sharpie.

Step 3: Cut out the traced envelope shape.

Step 4: Either place the cut out magazine back inside the original envelope and then refold the envelope, or just fold all the sides inward and copy how the original envelope looks.

Step 5: Remove the magazine from the original envelope. Use the glue stick to glue the bottom flap down to the two side flaps. Make sure it doesn’t get glued to the inside of the envelope!

Step 6: Let the envelope dry. It’s then ready for use!
