The EcoFellow Experience: Chiara Favaloro

Hello! I’m Chiara Favaloro, the current Marketing Fellow at CET. Last May I graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges where I studied Anthropology, Sociology, European Studies, and Dance. Which may make you question how I ended up working for an environmental non-profit. Well, I knew that I wanted to pursue marketing and communications after completing a summer internship with a PR agency in New York City. However, I still wasn’t sure which type of company, products, or services I would want to promote. When I heard about CET’s EcoFellowship program from my older sister Sonja, a former EcoFellow, I was excited about the company’s mission and all of the unique opportunities that the EcoFellowship offers. Although I do not have an academic environmental background, I have always been passionate about sustainability, so promoting the mission and sustainable actions that CET offers seemed like something I would genuinely be excited to promote. This has definitely been true, and I have really enjoyed the past six months of my EcoFellowship; here are some reasons why:

My Co-workers: One of the best parts of being on the marketing team is that I get to assist in the creation and distribution of marketing content and digital communications across all departments of CET. This enables me to collaborate with nearly all of our 60 passionate and hard-working employees, across three different office locations. Furthermore, being one of five Fellows has provided me with an automatic group of friends, and the opportunity to work in a cohort with 4 other people my age who are in the same college to career transition that I am in. Overall, CET is a very welcoming and friendly community that I love being a part of.

Creative Opportunities: Another great aspect of being the Marketing Fellow is that I am able to be creative in many ways. Using Adobe Creative Suite programs, like InDesign and Photoshop, I create promotional graphics and flyers for CET and some of our partner organizations. Designing each of these materials to be unique and eye-catching, while also conveying important information, is a fun challenge. I enjoy experimenting with the different colors, fonts, images, and layouts available. I am also able to be creative while doing retail marketing for our store, EcoBuilding Bargains. This means running our Instagram account and making a short and fun advertisement video each week that promotes our new and noteworthy items for sale. We post up-cycled and vintage items frequently on Instagram, and our videos are shared in a weekly newsletter and on our YouTube account.

Promotional Events: I have really enjoyed assisting in press events with our partner organizations. For example, we recently worked with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources to plan a press event in Winchendon, MA. During the event we announced that CET received a $33,000 Rural Business Development Grant! This funding will be used to provide timely information, funding request assistance, and technical assistance to rural farms that wish to improve their energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. Assisting in making an environmental impact on the state level is very exciting and rewarding.

The EcoFellowship is such a unique opportunity compared to other jobs or internships because we are given a great deal of responsibility and held to high expectations, while also given guidance and support while we learn new skills. I feel very lucky to be a part of such an amazing program, and I strongly encourage recent college graduates to apply! We are accepting applications for the 2017-2018 EcoFellowship now through February 28, 2017.
