Green Your Holidays: Upcycled Bows for Gift Wrapping

Our wonderful EcoFellow alumna, Sarah Hebert, put together this tutorial which shows you how to make upcycled bows for gift wrapping out of old magazines and a metal fastener. They would look great on a gift wrapped in newspaper, don’t you think?

1).

You will need a magazine, scissors, and one inch metal fasteners.

1

2).

Cut a page of the magazine into seven strips.

2

3).

Cut one of the strips in half.

3

4).

Roll the half strip into a loop, and carefully push the fastener through to secure it.

4

5).

Take one of the remaining strips and fold it in half so that the colorful side is facing out

5

6).

Do the same to the other side so that it is symmetrical.

6

7).

 Carefully attach the loop.

7

8).

Repeat twice to form the first layer of the bow.

8

9).

Fold the remaining 3 strips a little looser so that they are a bit longer than those made in step 6.

9

10).

Fasten the bottom of your bow.

10

Tada!

I love it. I’ve used unprinted newspaper (you can buy the end rolls from the local paper) for wrapping, but I couldn’t seem to get away from the plastic ribbons and bows.
