How to prepare for a home energy assessment

The Benefits of a Home Energy Assessment

Have you signed up for your Home Energy Assessment yet?

A no-cost Home Energy Assessment (HEA) through the Mass Save® program is a great way to save energy and money!

Preparing for Your Assessment

Gathering information: Bill history and concerns

Before your energy specialist arrives, there are a few things you can do ahead of time to make sure you get the best, most accurate assessment possible. First, gather your bill history. Upon arrival, your energy specialist will assess this information to get a quick idea of how much energy is being consumed each month. Additionally, write down any areas of concern you have. Is there a room that’s especially cold? A drafty spot on your second floor? Make a note of it so the specialist can address these issues during the assessment.

Preparing your home: clearing spaces and fuel

It’s important to clear the way for access to all attic and basement spaces. This allows the energy specialist to assess those tucked away places in your home, which may be the source of leaky spots or low insulation levels. Also, make sure you have fuel if it’s the summer, as your oil tank may be out from the previous winter. Passing results from tests on your combustion appliances are required for proposed air-sealing and insulation work to receive the Mass Save program’s incentives.

communication and logistics: questions, pets, and time

During the assessment, don’t hesitate to ask questions. The specialist can offer insight into what’s going on and how it affects the conditions of your home. It’s also important to corral your pets while the energy specialist is in your home. Finally, make time for the full two hours. Home energy assessments are scheduled for two hours, so please allow a half-hour window for your energy specialist to arrive at your home.

conclusion: maximizing your home energy assessment

So there you have it – by taking these preparatory steps, you’ll get the most out of your Home Energy Assessment. Stay tuned to our Resilient insights for more about what to expect during your assessment!
