Step 1 of 7 14% Let's find out your decarbonization level! Take this quick quiz to discover where you are on your climate journey. By answering a few simple questions, you’ll see how your everyday choices add up, learn your current decarbonization level, and get ideas for next steps you can take to reduce your carbon footprint. Which sentence sounds most like your home?(Required) We're just getting starting with saving energy and reducing waste We've made some upgrades to save energy and water Our home uses mostly clean energy or electricity instead of fossil fuels 💡 Did you know? Fossil fuels are called fossil fuels because they come from plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. When burned, they release gases that increase heat in the atmosphere. Electricity can be generated from renewable sources like solar and wind, which produce far fewer emissions over time. Homes that run on electricity can take advantage of these lower-emission sources. How does your home stay warm, cool, and make hot water?(Required) We use oil, gas, or propane We use a heat pump for some things (like heating or hot water) We use heat pumps for most things and/or cook with electricity (like induction) 💡 Did you know? A heat pump doesn’t create heat — it moves it. In winter, it pulls heat from the air or ground outside and brings it inside. In summer, it moves heat out of your home to keep it cool. As average temperatures rise, even places like Amherst increasingly need efficient cooling as well as heating. What happens to waste in your home?(Required) We recycle and are learning how to reduce trash We recycle and compost food scraps We try very hard to reuse things and avoid throw-away items 💡 Did you know? More than 30% of food grown in the U.S. goes uneaten. When food scraps end up in the trash, they break down in landfills and release methane, a gas that traps heat much more strongly than carbon dioxide. Composting keeps food scraps out of landfills and returns nutrients to the soil. Which sounds most like your home?(Required) We try to save water when we can We use water-saving appliances or collect rainwater to water plants We reuse water or have a yard with mostly native plants 💡 Did you know? Native plants evolved to thrive in local conditions. They usually need less water, fertilizer, and maintenance, and they provide food and habitat for pollinators like bees and butterflies that support healthy ecosystems. How do people in your household usually travel?(Required) Mostly gas car, with some walking/biking when possible A mix of driving a car, walking, biking, or taking the bus We use an electric car, bike a lot, or don’t need to drive much 💡 Did you know? If a household replaces one car trip per week with walking, biking, or transit, it can avoid hundreds of pounds of carbon pollution each year. Small changes, repeated over time, really add up.
